Breathing difficulties and brain damage?

Alex Asked: Breathing difficulties and brain damage?

The brain comprises only 5% of our body's mass yet requires 20% of its needed oxygen. My question is: Can breathing difficulties and/or symptoms such as congestion, phlegm, ructus or athsma that inhibit oxygen consumption in a mild or brief manner cause brain damage?

I ask this because I know sleep apnea can cause brain damage due to breathing difficulties while a sleep. Is the same true for these other symptoms? Also, is it true you pass out from lack of oxygen to the brain before damage occurs?

Breathing difficulties while eating: ructus and phlegm?

Alex Asked: Breathing difficulties while eating: ructus and phlegm?

Earlier while i was eating it was becoming slightly more difficult for me to breathe. Midway through the meal i noticed i was taking larger and more frequent breathes and was having to actually think about when to take a bite or drink so that i could time my breathing accordingly. after the meal and upon standing i realized it was a air trapped in my stomach as had several large burps. also, i've been somewhat conjested along with what feels like phlegm trapped in my throat/chest; this also made the breathing more difficult. during the meal it got so bad that my face and nose started to feel tingly and i felt light headed. all in all i was in this state for about 20 minutes.

I suppose my question is, can trapped air in my stomach somehow cause pressure making it difficult to breathe? also, i have a slight headache now. i know that people with sleep apnea can get brain damage from lack of O2;could i have possibly contracted a mild form from the amount of time i was in that state? I was still breathing, just not as efficiently i suppose. any help would be great

If you are ONLY going to say "go see a doctor", please don't bother answering this question.

Been suffering from depression for a year and now starting to see things?

Alex Asked: Been suffering from depression for a year and now starting to see things?

I take Zolof for my depression. I also take sleeping pills for my insomnia. Those are the only drugs I'm on, I am not on any other drugs. Recently over the past few weeks, I have been seeing things. Normally, I just hear voices in my head, but now I am seeing figures, sitting or standing or walking beside me, that the voices go with. I don't mind seeing these things, they are no harm to me. But I am interested in what I am seeing? Are these side affects from my pills? There is one figure that has been trying to get me to hurt myself, I try to ignore him but its scary. I can't talk to anyone about this, because I'm scared they will put me on more pills, and I don't like taking the pills, because I feel like I'm not in control of what ever I am doing. I'm 14 years old, female.

Do I have any mental disorders?

Alex Asked: Do I have any mental disorders?

Whenever I "day dream" I always dream about stuff/situations that are not real. Sometimes I act out/pretend that these things are happening. Sometimes I talk as if in a conversation with another person in the day dream.

I don't find any of this to be normal, it's hard to describe what I am trying to say…

I also get frustrated/angry/depressed a lot when I get bored…like right now…

I also have trouble sleeping, like, I will be asleep for like 5 or 6 hours, then I will wake up and go to sleep for like 20-30 min intervals…

I am also bi-sexual

Anyone that can help? Any suggestions?

Being discharged from mental health services?

Alex Asked: Being discharged from mental health services?

I was told today that I will be discharged from the mental health service team that work with me as they think I am well enough. However I feel that this is the wrong decision as the person that sees me only sees me every 6 months.

They say I'm doing very well in my progress, but they aren't there when the problems start at night mainly. And when I tell them what's going on feels like they aren't listening.

I suffer from dissociative disorder, insomnia, depression and psychotic episodes and don't take any medication for any.

Although they said I can re contact mental health services in the future via my GP I know for a fact that I won't as I am the person who doesn't ask for help.

I feel so powerless that they can make a decision and I have to accept it.
Is there anything I can do?

Friend had miscarriage, so scared for her? what happens? Long question but so important for me, plea

Alex Asked: Friend had miscarriage, so scared for her? what happens? Long question but so important for me, plea

3 weeks ago Today, my friend (just 18 years old) got taken to hospital because of stomach pains and not being able to keep down any fluids. She told me she was in for 2 days on a drip. She only told me Yesterday, however, it was because she, despite always using 2 precautions during sex (she told me this) she had somehow fallen pregnant. She didn't realise this until she was in hospital. The nurses told her she was pregnant but had had a miscarriage, bless her heart. She told me that she would have probably had an abortion anyway, as she's not ready for children. However, this was 3 weeks ago, and she still regularly feels really ill, and sleeps throughout the day and night. Is this normal? I'm really scared for her, and want to help her in any way I can, I love her so much. I don't know what happens or why miscarriages happen, but would like to know stuff about them, so I know what to do to help my friend. How long do the tiredness and illness usually go on for? I'm so terrified, and have told her I'm always at the end of a phone or Facebook etc, at any time of the day or night, if she ever needs a chat, and I'll always be there for her. Are miscarriages common? She told me she is ok with what has happened now, and she didn't want a child anyway. But she needs psychologists throughout her life due to eating disorders and depression, so how will this really be affecting her? She is usually such a bubbly, beautiful girl who's smile lights up all rooms, so to see her ill all the time is so upsetting and scary. Will she be ok? She lives quite far away, so I can't just go and see her, but I told her, I will do anything for her, and if she needs me there, then I will drop everything I'm doing to go and see her to help. She said her boyfriend has taken it really badly, but I can't speak to him as she said he never wants to think about it, which is understandable. Please help, I don't care how 'grim' the details are, all I want to know is what has happened/how can I help her through this, as I'm sure she isn't as 'ok' with it as she said she is. I'm thinking of ringing her this morning, but don't know what to say, or don't want to upset her, but I care so much for her, I didn't get any sleep last night as I was worried sick for her. I love her so much as a friend icon smile Friend had miscarriage, so scared for her? what happens? Long question but so important for me, plea Thank you for help

Friend (18 y/o) had miscarriage, how can I help her?

Alex Asked: Friend (18 y/o) had miscarriage, how can I help her?

My friend got pregnant a few weeks ago despite using 2 precautions. I didn't know this until Tonight when she told me she had a miscarriage 2 weeks ago. I was distraught for her. I've sent her messages of support and told her I am always going to be there for her. She said however, (via facebook) that she feels fine about it now, as she would have probably have had an abortion anyway. I love her so much as a friend and will always be there for her.But is this really possible to feel ok about it just a couple of weeks later, despite not wanting it? She has has a psychologist for years as she has an eating disorder and other pyschological issues, so she is quite unstable. Also she is still feeling ill and very tired (sleeping all day) at the moment. Is this normal? I panic so much for her and want her to be ok, is the fact she's always sleepy and still gets ill a big concern? thanks for your help!
