How can I sleep more when I’m manic?

Asked: How can I sleep more when I’m manic?

So I have bipolar disorder, and whenever I slip into mania.. I just can't sleep. I'll sleep like 1-2 hrs at night (if I sleep at all) then I wake up and feel like I'm ready to take off. During the time when I should be sleeping, I get any work that needs to be done finished, and then I dilly-dally by coming up with new "projects" that "need to be done" (re-tiling the bathroom, anyone?), and I can't focus too much on my hobbies, television, or reading.
I've tried a few medications in the past (ambien, seroquel, trazadone and am trying lunesta right now).
I just want to sleep when I'm manic, and I'm thinking if I were able to sleep, the mania would be under control (maybe not, but it's worth a shot because nothing else is working).

Suggestions?

You don't need sleeping pills, you need lithium.

It's a paradox, the mania feeds into the lack of sleep and the lack of sleep feeds into the mania.

Stabilize the mania first.

I agree with the person above me, you need lithium or another mood stabilizer. It stabilizes my mood almost perfectly. When I get manic, I'm prescribed ambien.Seroquel made me gain tons of weight. If sleeping medications don't work, you need to talk to your doctor.
